Marí, De Larrea, Navarro and Barberá: Four friends making history with the U17M national team

Winning a runner-up in the U17 World Championship with the Spanish national team is a great success, but if you do it with friends it tastes even better. That is the message shared by Valencia Basket players Pablo Navarro, David Barberá, Lucas Marí and Sergio De Larrea after returning with their medals and an unforgettable experience. A historic silver medal for Spanish basketball, as none of its teams in training categories had ever won this award.


All four players agree on one thing, the way in which this training camp has brought them together. "It's fortunate. It's not just an experience with your teammates, but with friends" says Marí. Barberá refers to the group as "a family that will go beyond the silver medal", and Navarro adds that "what's cool is to share it with the three of us, because I think we all deserve it, we've worked so hard". 


Navarro was unable to play in the tournament due to an injury during the preparation, but he has been with his teammates until the end: "I have tried to take the positive side of this, to try to help them and help them to bring out their best version and, the truth is that I am very happy with everything we have worked on and with the result we have obtained".


The team reached the World Cup final, despite losing to Lithuania in the group stage. In that final, they failed to beat the United States after a very close match. And although that moment hurt, they now appreciate the historic milestone they have achieved: "We didn't realise what we had won until a few hours ago, we are runners-up in the World Cup," says De Larrea. 


For 17-year-old players it is not usual to play in a full pavilion. This World Cup, which has been played in Malaga, had more than 6,000 people in the stands cheering in the final. "It's a dream, it's playing with a sixth player, who is not on the court, but you can feel it. Every basket vibrates, every defence vibrates... it's brutal, it's amazing", recalls Marí. 


Valencia Basket has been the only team that has had the representation of four players, something that Barberá wanted to value: "Being 4 of Valencia is a clear example of what is being done here in L'Alqueria in recent years. In the end the work is reflected in this, in the calls, both in this and in other categories". And, finally, he also wanted to send a message to the other players of L'Alqueria, for whom they are an example: "Keep working to achieve your dream, to reach the national teams, the regional ones... and keep fighting".
