Arturo Ortiz: "You have to create athletes and then those athletes have to play basketball"

The training sessions for coaches of the Basketball Chair with the University of Valencia and the support of Caixabank continue in L'Alqueria del Basket. May comes to an end with the second training day of this month, this time with the strength and conditioning coach Arturo Ortiz. This clinic -on-site and online- was followed by more than 100 coaches, as always from the Valencian Community, but also from other parts of Spain such as Vigo, Burgos, Madrid or Jaén and some from foreign countries such as Peru, Holland or Portugal.

 

Ortiz is a S&C coach with a degree in Physical Education from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, who worked with several basketball players such as Jaime Fernandez, Xabi Lopez-Arostegui, Toko Shengelia, Daniel Clark or Ilimane Diop. The theme of his presentation was "Model of Integrated Physical Preparation in Basketball".

 

The coach explained that for him "there is no such thing as integrated strength and conditioning. I believe that pure physical conditions have to be worked in a pure way and then the basketball training system leads you to integrate everything. You have to create athletes and then those athletes have to play basketball. There are always problems of time, the needs of the coaches... That has to be solved, but the S&C coach has to be a S&C coach. The key word is adaptation, if we are able to adapt the players or not to our intensities".

 

The training of coaches at all levels is becoming increasingly necessary. Ortiz argued that "physical preparation is an important part of the game and is becoming more and more important because of the type of game, because of how the game has changed in recent years, forcing us to be more explosive and powerful. We have to train the coaches and bring them up to date".
