The L’Alqueria del Basket Basketball Chair at the University of Valencia has launched a new study focusing on the relationship between the leadership styles of coaches and families and burnout among adolescent male and female basketball players. This phenomenon refers to a state of physical and emotional exhaustion, accompanied by a loss of motivation and a diminished sense of accomplishment in sports. The research, published in the scientific journal Sports, involved 540 athletes aged 11 to 18 from 50 teams across five clubs in the province of Valencia.

 

The results point to a key finding: the coach’s leadership style is related to the players’ psychological well-being. Styles based on trust, individual support, and motivation are associated with greater fulfillment of basic psychological needs and lower levels of burnout. The study also highlights the influence of the family environment, particularly through support for autonomy, competence, and a sense of belonging among young athletes. Overall, the results reinforce the importance of creating sports environments that foster personal development and sustainable participation in sports.
