Historical 5th position of L'Horta Godella in LEB Plata to face an exciting playoffs

L'Horta Godella LEB Plata team finished last weekend the regular league with a historical 5th place, the best classification of Valencia Basket's second team since its promotion to the bronze category of Spanish basketball. A project that lives its third season, the first under Tomás Lamas, which still aims to improve the young players and now faces an exciting playoffs. With a balance of 14-12 only the average with the fourth has prevented them from being one step above. A great record thanks to a providential second round. At the end of the first round the team rested 13th with a 4-9. From that moment on, the subsidiary made a 10-3 that has catapulted them to this historic 5th position.


The coach confesses that "at the beginning it was hard, we are the youngest team in the competition, but we ended up making the best record of a regular season of the second team. I'm happy for that, but even happier for the evolution of all the boys. The group objective is important, but the fact that there are many young players with a great future is the most important thing. All the players are better players today than when they started. The progression and the work was noticeable. We lost the fourth place last weekend, but we had already entered the playoffs a couple of games ago. I'm very happy with the way they worked throughout the year".


Only in the year of the promotion to LEB Plata with Xavi Albert, current coach of the men's first team of Valencia Basket, they were close to that 5th place, finishing in 6th position, despite the fact that the record was also 14-12. Of course, the young and rookie team showed great ambition, reaching the end of the playoffs and being just one win away from promotion to LEB Oro, which escaped on the court of Albacete. Last year, the team was in eighth position and fell in the playoffs first round.


Now, L'Horta Godella will face Clinica Ponferrada, 5th in the west league, with Juan Hierrezuelo and Alex Harguindey, in the round of 16. The first will be this Sunday at 18:30h in the town of Leon and the second on Saturday 20 at 17:15h in the pavilion of Godella. Lamas assures that they face it "with excitement and try to get as far as possible. The second round we had nine wins in a row. We beat the top and bottom teams, we only lost one away game against Cartagena and the rest we were able to win them all. We are confident and we feel we can beat anyone. A little bit of enjoyment and playing a game with a little bit of pressure, with people on the court".


In a team with more youth than experience, the most outstanding player is the promising Sergio de Larrea, who is averaging 13.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 16.2 efficency.


In his first season at the club, the coach admits that the welcome has been "spectacular. I had been told that it was a family before arriving and it was twice as much. I was very happy, I was welcomed with open arms. I feel at home, which I didn't think I would say outside Argentina. I worked in Japan, I was also in other countries and I was in Burgos last year, which was also very good, but the reception here, very happy. I am looking forward to continue being here".
